Wolverines down Thiel

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Ten men scored goals Tuesday night for the Grove City College men's lacrosse team to help lift the Wolverines to a 29-3 home victory over Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field. The 29 goals are the most scored by Grove City in one game in the four-year history of the varsity program.

Junior midfielder Brett Gladstone (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) and sophomore attack James Petrolle (Damascus, Md./Damascus) each pumped in seven goals to help pace Grove City's offense. Junior attack Jed Speers (Medina, Ohio/Medina) scored three times.

Senior attack Aidan Morse (Lynchburg, Va./New Covenant), junior midfielder Blaise Bishop (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), junior attack Michael La Forte (Waterford, Conn./Waterford), freshman Griffen Agawa (San Ramon, Calif./California) and freshman Jack Carpenter (Newtown, Conn./St. Joseph) all scored twice. Junior long stick midfielder Addison Bennett (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) and junior midfielder Grant Evans (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) each added goals.

La Forte recorded a team-high seven assists while Speers notched five assists. Petrolle assisted three goals while Agawa, Bishop and Evans each assisted two goals. Bennett, Carpenter, Gladstone and Morse all had one assist. 

Grove City (6-1, 3-0 PAC) bolted to a 10-0 lead in the first half as Petrolle scored four times and Gladstone had three goals during the outburst. Petrolle assisted four goals during the run, then added the 10th score as the Wolverines led 10-0 with 3:20 left in the second quarter.

Evans won 15 of 16 faceoffs. Junior Keith Torrillo (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) won 7 of 9 faceoffs and sophomore Max Chmura (Wadsworth, Ohio/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) won 7 of 11 faceoff opportunities. 

Evans led Grove City with 13 ground balls. Bennett picked up eight ground balls and Chmura picked up six ground balls. Senior Jared Hurd (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) secured five ground balls. Petrolle caused three turnovers. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Petit (Pensacola, Fla./West Florida High School of Advanced Technology) earned the win after making five saves in the first half. Freshman Danny Stone (Chantilly, Va./Flint Hill) played the final 30 minutes and recorded three saves. 

Grove City set a single-game program record with 79 shots Tuesday night. The Wolverines outshot Thiel, 79-19. Grove City had 18 turnovers while Thiel turned over possession 34 times. The Wolverines converted on 5 of 9 man-up opportunities while Thiel went 0 for 5.

The Wolverines will visit Bethany at 1 p.m. Saturday in conference play.
