Big 2nd half carries Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team opened the second half on a 24-4 run Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines rolled to an 86-64 victory over visiting Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

That run ignited Grove City's 58-point second half. The Wolverines trailed 33-28 at halftime before storming back in the second half. Grove City went 6 of 9 on three-point attempts in the second half and committed only one turnover over the final 20 minutes of the game.

Four Grove City men scored in double figures, led by senior guard Erik Meiners (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) with 21 points. Meiners went 6 for 8 from behind the three-point line. 

Senior guard Justice Rice (Monessen, Pa./Monessen) posted a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double while senior forward Joe Meola (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) scored 11 points. Freshman forward Luca Robinson (Castaic, Calif./Hart) scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in his first collegiate start. 

Consecutive layups by Meola early in the second half gave Grove City a 34-33 lead. Senior forward Chris McKrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) scored after a steal, boosting the lead to 36-33. Junior guard Isaac Thrasher (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) drilled a three-pointer and Meiners followed with consecutive threes, giving Grove City a 47-37 lead.

Robinson's two-handed dunk and another Meiners three closed the run. Defensively, Grove City held Bethany without a field goal for the first eight minutes of the second half. 

Rice added five assists while junior center Josh Brown (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw) and sophomore forward Josh Brown (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw) both recorded three assists. Rice also blocked three shots. 

For the game, Grove City shot 30 of 75 (40.0 percent) while holding Bethany to 16-of-50 (32 percent) shooting. Bethany shot 27 percent (6 of 22) in the second half from the floor.

Grove City out-rebounded Bethany (2-7), 60-29. Grove City had 27 offensive rebounds, compared to 23 Bethany defensive rebounds. Meola added seven rebounds and White pulled down six boards for the Wolverines. 

Grove City finished the game with 13 turnovers, 12 of which came in the first half. Bethany had 12 turnovers for the game. 

Dalton Hamrick led Bethany with 24 points. 

Saturday's win clinches the No. 4 seed in the season-ending conference tournament for Grove City. The Wolverines will host the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament quarterfinals March 16.

The Wolverines will conclude the regular season Wednesday at Waynesburg. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
