Grove City rallies for split

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a home doubleheader Saturday afternoon with visiting Chatham at College Field in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference members. Grove City scored twice in the bottom of the 10th inning to win the nightcap, 5-4. Chatham took the opener, 4-0.

Grove City trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the 10th before charging back for the win. Senior first baseman Haley Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) belted a run-scoring double that brought in freshman pinch runner Erin Mulholland (Malvern, Pa./Delaware County Christian) with the tying run.

Dietz moved to third on the throw. Following consecutive walks, junior shortstop Lexi Buck (Akron, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) cracked a single through the left side that scored Dietz.

Chatham led 1-0 in the second inning of Game Two but Grove City quickly tied the game as freshman catcher Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) singled in sophomore pinch runner Clare Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Indian River).

In the third, Dietz doubled in sophomore pitcher Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley), tying the game 2-2. Senior right fielder Hannah Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) then singled in Haley Dietz with the go-ahead run.

Dawson doubled and singled in four at bats. Haley Dietz finished 2 for 5 while freshman third baseman Maralee Caldana (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) also doubled.

Dawson struck out nine and walked one in eight innings of work. Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Constantino (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) earned the win in relief. Constantino pitched two innings, struck out two and allowed one run.

Senior left fielder Ashley Mietlicki (Oak Hill, Va./South Lakes) and junior second baseman Cara Polese (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest) both singled in the opener for Grove City. Senior pitcher Ashley Cornelius (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) struck out six in seven innings. Cornelius allowed three earned runs but took the setback.

Saturday's 10-inning game marked the longest game for the Wolverines since April 8, 2013, when Grove City played an 11-inning game at Thiel.

Grove City will visit Bethany for a doubleheader Monday at 3:30 p.m. That will conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule. Conference play begins Thursday, April 1 at Saint Vincent.
