WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a road doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Washington & Jefferson in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference foes. Grove City earned a 1-0 win in the opener at Brooks Park. W&J took Game Two, 8-0.
Senior pitcher
Ashley Cornelius (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) fired a six-hit shutout in the opener for Grove City (4-6). Cornelius (4-1) struck out seven over seven innings. W&J put the tying and winning runs in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh but Cornelius worked out of the jam to earn her second shutout and fifth complete game of the season.
Grove City broke through in the third inning for the game's lone run. Sophomore third baseman
Michaela Ban (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) led off with a single and then advanced to third on a double by senior left fielder
Ashley Mietlicki (Oak Hill, Va./South Lakes). Ban then raced home on a sacrifice fly from junior second baseman
Cara Polese (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest).

Maralee Caldana (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) also had singles for Grove City, which finished the game with four hits.Â
W&J broke open Game Two with five runs in the fifth inning. Junior shortstop

Sophomore pitcher
Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) started and allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. She took the setback. Sophomore
Mariah Francis (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo) pitched in relief, allowing one run.
Tuesday's games do not count toward the conference standings. The Wolverines will host conference member Chatham at 1 p.m. Saturday in a doubleheader.
