Wolverines earn road split

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a road doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Washington & Jefferson in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference foes. Grove City earned a 1-0 win in the opener at Brooks Park. W&J took Game Two, 8-0.

Senior pitcher Ashley Cornelius (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) fired a six-hit shutout in the opener for Grove City (4-6). Cornelius (4-1) struck out seven over seven innings. W&J put the tying and winning runs in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh but Cornelius worked out of the jam to earn her second shutout and fifth complete game of the season.

Grove City broke through in the third inning for the game's lone run. Sophomore third baseman Michaela Ban (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) led off with a single and then advanced to third on a double by senior left fielder Ashley Mietlicki (Oak Hill, Va./South Lakes). Ban then raced home on a sacrifice fly from junior second baseman Cara Polese (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest).

Polese and freshman DP Maralee Caldana (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) also had singles for Grove City, which finished the game with four hits.

W&J broke open Game Two with five runs in the fifth inning. Junior shortstop Lexi Buck (Akron, Ohio/Lake Center Christian), freshman left fielder Lauren McNeil (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and freshman DP Emily Smyth (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) all singled for Grove City.

Sophomore pitcher Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) started and allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. She took the setback. Sophomore Mariah Francis (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo) pitched in relief, allowing one run.

Tuesday's games do not count toward the conference standings. The Wolverines will host conference member Chatham at 1 p.m. Saturday in a doubleheader.
