GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Five Grove City College men's basketball players scored in double figures Thursday night to help the fourth-seeded Wolverines rally for a 91-85 victory at No. 2 Geneva in the semifinals of the 2021 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Geneva's Metheny Field House.
Grove City (8-3), the defending conference champion, will visit archrival Westminster for the conference tournament title Saturday at 4 p.m. Top-seeded Westminster (10-1) ousted No. 6 seed Thiel, 101-60, in Thursday night's other semifinal.
Senior guard
Justice Rice (Monessen, Pa./Monessen) fired in a career-high 25 points to pace Grove City while junior guard
Ben Rose (Helena, Ala./Helena) posted 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Senior guard
Erik Meiners (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) added 11 points. Junior guard
Isaac Thrasher (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and sophomore center
Elijah White (Zelienople, Pa./Portersville Christian) each pumped in 10 points.
White broke an 80-80 tie with 1:44 left in the game as he scored in the paint. He then put back his own miss on Grove City's next possession, pushing the lead to 84-80. Rice followed with two free throws after another Grove City stop, helping seal the victory.
Geneva led 77-75 with less than five minutes remaining but Rose put Grove City up 78-77 with a three-point play. Geneva's Matt Veynovich gave his squad its final lead of the game by draining a jumper on the next possession. However, White scored on a fast break with 2:48, giving Grove City an 80-79 advantage.
Grove City shot 62 percent (21 of 34) from the field in the first half and led 47-42 af halftime. Geneva owned a 34-30 lead with 5:35 left in the half but consecutive Rose jumpers tied the game. White's transition dunk capped a 6-0 spurt for the Wolverines. Robinson's three-point play with 57 seconds left in the half gave Grove City a 47-39 lead.
Overall, Grove City shot 36 of 67 (54 percent) from the field. Geneva finished the game 26 of 62 (42 percent) from the floor, including 11-for-23 accuracy on three-point goals.
Robinson ripped down seven rebounds to help Grove City attain a 44-29 edge on the glass. White added six rebounds while Rice and Rose both had five rebounds. Rice also had seven assists. Rice now has 995 career points.
Grove City turned over the ball 13 times while Geneva had 10 turnovers. Lyle Tipton led Geneva (8-3) with 17 points.
Geneva defeated Grove City in the Wolverines' season opener February 13, 92-87, in Beaver Falls. That game featured 16 ties and 12 lead changes. Thursday night's tilt had 14 lead changes and 10 ties.
Grove City defeated Geneva in last year's championship game, 86-70. Now, the Wolverines will look to capture their second straight conference title Saturday at Westminster.
