Grove City advances to ECAC title game

ERIE, Pa. -- Senior pitcher John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) allowed one earned run and two hits over 8 2/3 innings Saturday afternoon to help lead the Grove City College baseball team to a 3-1 victory at Penn State Behrend in the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championship Tournament.

Grove City, the No. 3 seed, will now face top-seeded Pfeiffer (N.C.) in Sunday's championship game at 1 p.m. at Behrend. Pfeiffer defeated Wilson, 10-2, in Saturday's first semifinal.

Saturday's win gives Grove City its program-record 28th victory this year. The Wolveries (28-15) won 27 games in 2016 on their way to that year's ECAC crown.

Bini (7-3) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and allowed only two singles. Behrend's lone run came on a double play in the fifth inning.

In the ninth inning, Behrend (24-17) had runners at first and second with two outs but junior reliever Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) retired pinch hitter Christian Pacifico to end the game. Wacker recorded his third save of the season.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior third baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) singled and later scored on an error. The Wolverines added a run in the second inning as sophomore center fielder Matt Knauer (Allison Park, Pa./Eden Christian) drove in sophomore second baseman Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) with a sacrifice fly.

The Wolverines pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth as freshman right fielder Colton Lineman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) drove in junior shortstop Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) with a sacrifice fly.

Abbott and Burke both went 2 for 4. The game featured no extra-base hits.

Bini improved to 27-8 in his career. The 27 wins are the most in program history. Grove City is in pursuit of its third ECAC baseball title. The Wolverines also won the ECAC championship in 2011 and 2016.
