AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team concluded its Spring Break trip to central Florida by winning its final three games. Grove City (6-4) pulled out a 7-6 win Friday afternoon over Emerson. Saturday, the Wolverines then swept a doubleheader from Martin Luther, winning 11-4 and 2-0.
In Saturday's finale, sophomore pitcher
Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) fired a one-hit shutout for the Wolverines. Brothers struck out nine and faced only 23 batters in his seven innings.
Offensively, Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when freshman left fielder
Colton Lineman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) doubled in senior catcher
Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point). Boyle's sacrifice fly in the fifth drove in freshman
Matt Knauer (Allison Park, Pa./Eden Christian), pushing the lead to 2-0.
Grove City pounded out 14 hits in Saturday's opener against Martin Luther. Senior pitcher
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) led the attack by going 4 for 4 while Lineman doubled, singled and knocked in three runs. Sophomore second baseman
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) and freshman right fielder
Joey Kolb (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) both scored twice.
Burke pitched four shutout innings to pick up the win. He allowed two hits and struck out two. Sophomore
Nick Chiodo (Solon, Ohio/Solon) pitched two innings of relief, allowing one run. Freshmen
Alex McAndrew (Avoca, Pa./Pittston) and
Robby Randolph (Cranberry Township, Pa./North Catholic) each pitched in relief in the seventh inning.
In Friday's single game against Emerson, pinch runner Knauer scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth after Emerson misplayed Clary's two-out single. Knauer ran for junior first baseman
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton), who walked with two outs in the inning.
Clary went 3 for 4 while Lineman and senior center fielder
Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) both went 3 for 5. Hammel doubled while Burke knocked in two runs. Grove City trailed 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth but Burke tied the game when his single drove in Lineman.
Sophomore pitcher
D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) allowed two runs and four hits in six innings. He struck out six men. Sophomore
Joel Engstrom (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) earned the relief win after pitching the final three innings. He yielded three hits and three earned runs.
Grove City will host Bethany at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Jack Behringer Field. It will be Grove City's home opener as well as the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener.
