GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior pitchers
John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xavierian) and
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) both threw nine-inning complete games Monday afternoon to help lift the Grove City College baseball team to a sweep of visiting Chatham in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Jack Behringer Field.
Bini threw a four-hitter in Game One to help lead the Wolverines to a 4-2 victory. In the nightcap, Burke produced more hits (four) than he allowed (three) as Grove City earned an 8-0 victory. It is Burke's first career shutout and the first by a Grove City pitcher since April 21, 2017, when Bini blanked Westminster over seven innings, 6-0. It is Grove City's first nine-inning shutout since April 15, 2013, when Max Vickerman threw a six-hit shutout in an 11-0 win over archrival Geneva.Â
Burke also went a combined 7 for 8 in the doubleheader. In Game One, he went 3 for 4 and scored two runs while playing third base. Burke then went 4 for 4 with a double, two runs scored, three runs batted in and a walk in the second game.Â
Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the opener when Burke singled in freshman second baseman
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian). Burke scored the second run of the game on a single by junior right fielder
Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge).
Hammel's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning drove in Burke, giving Grove City a 3-1 lead. With the Wolverines leading 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Clary singled in senior left fielder
Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area). Hammel finished 2 for 4 with a double.
Bini allowed one earned run in nine innings. He struck out a season-high eight men.
Grove City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game Two. Burke doubled in Graham while sophomore first baseman
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) drove in Clary with the first of his two sacrifice flies. Hammel then singled in Burke.
In the second inning, Burke walked with the bases loaded, bringing home senior third baseman
Cameron Smail (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area). Two innings later, Burke singled in Smail with Grove City's fifth run. Clary singled in Graham in the sixth inning and then came home on Dayton's sacrifice fly. In the eighth inning, sophomore shortstop
Bob Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) walked with the bases loaded, scoring Burke.
Abbott, Hammel and Smail all went 2 for 4. Graham finished 2 for 5 as the Wolverines finished with 13 hits.Â
