GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened the northern portion of the 2018 schedule Monday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader with visiting Pitt-Greensburg in non-conference action at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City earned a 10-5 win in the opener while Pitt-Greensburg rebounded for a 4-2 victory in the second game.
In Game One, freshman catcher
Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) paced Grove City's 12-hit attack by going 3 for 3 with a double and four runs batted in. Senior left fielder
Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) doubled and singled while sophomore first baseman
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) went 2 for 3.Â
Orner's two-run single highlighted Grove City's four-run first inning as the Wolverines jumped out to a 4-0 lead. In the second, junior
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) drove in senior third baseman
Cameron Smail (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) with a groundout while Dayton singled in Graham to push Grove City's lead to 6-0.
Pitt-Greensburg pulled to within 6-4 in the top of the third inning but Grove City countered when sophomore shortstop
Bob Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) doubled in Orner. The Wolverines then added three more runs in the fifth as Orner singled in Dayton and sophomore
Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). Abbott later scored the third run of the inning on a single by junior second baseman
Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline).
Burke earned the pitching win as he started and went a predetermined three innings. Wacker pitched two innings of relief, allowing one run. Sophomore
Corey Thomas (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Each pitcher yielded two hits.
Graham, Burke and junior DH
Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) all doubled in Game Two for Grove City. The Wolverines trailed 4-0 entering the sixth but cut the lead in half when Orner and Auth both walked with the bases loaded. Grove City left the bases loaded in the sixth inning, however.Â
Junior
John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) started and allowed three earned runs in four innings for Grove City. Freshman
D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief while freshman
