Big comeback helps Grove City humble Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- A 21-point fourth quarter vaulted the Grove City College football team to a come-from-behind 35-27 win Saturday night at Presidents' Athletic Conference archrival Geneva. The victory extends Grove City's win streak to five games and also marks the Wolverines' first win at Reeves Field since 1979.

Grove City trailed 20-0 after one quarter and faced a 27-14 deficit entering the fourth quarter. However, the Wolverines scored the final 21 points of the game over the final 12:40. Sophomore wide receiver Cody Gustafson (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) cut the lead to 27-21 when he pulled in a 67-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Josh Ehst (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) with 12:40 remaining.

Grove City then pulled ahead, 28-27, with 2:40 to go as junior running back Wesley Schools (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis) bulled into the end zone from four yards out. Freshman kicker Nick Morrow (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) added the go-ahead extra point. The 12-play, 62-yard touchdown drive started at the Grove City 38 after Geneva had a bad snap on a 35-yard field goal attempt.

The Grove City defense then forced a Geneva punt on the subsequent drive. One play after the punt, Schools charged 55 yards up the middle for his third touchdown of the game to give Grove City a 35-27 lead with 2:04 left.

Geneva drove to the Grove City 19 but the Wolverine defense stuffed Trewon Marshall one yard short on 4th-and-2 with 1:11 left to seal the victory.

Gustafson caught 13 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. He became Grove City's all-time career leader with 19 touchdown catches. Gustafson also extended his single-season record for touchdown catches as he now as 14. Schools ran for 142 yards on 24 carries while Ehst finished 18 of 33 for 204 yards.

Normally a fullback in Geneva's option-based offense, Marshall started at quarterback for the Golden Tornadoes and ran for three touchdowns in the first quarter. Grove City broke through at the 12:09 mark of the second quarter as Ehst tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Gustafson.

The Wolverines cut the lead to 20-14 late in the first half when Schools scored on a six-yard touchdown run with 28 seconds left. Sophomore safety Patrick Mark (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Wellington) set up the Wolverines' 32-yard touchdown drive with a 30-yard interception return.

Mark led the Grove City defense with 11 tackles. Senior nose tackle Connor Lowe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) and freshman linebacker Parker Kilgore (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) both had nine stops. Kilgore also had a half sack. Junior linebacker Luke Salerno (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) posted 1.5 sacks and seven total tackles.

Ehst added with 54 rushing yards. Grove City finished with 400 offensive yards. Geneva finished with 434 yards. Grove City held a 24-21 edge in first downs while Geneva had a 31:20-28:40 time of possession advantage. Marshall led Geneva with 285 rushing yards on 36 carries.

At 6-3, Grove City has its best record after nine games since 1997. The Wolverines will close the regular season next Saturday at home against Thiel in the 35th annual battle for the prestigious Mercer County Cup. It will also be Senior Day for the Wolverines at Robert E. Thorn Field.
