GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team combined an explosive and balanced offense with a stout defensive performance Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines rolled to a 28-3 home win over Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Robert E. Thorn Field. It is Grove City's third straight win overall.
Grove City (4-3, 3-3 PAC) amassed 482 yards of offense with 234 coming on the ground and 248 through the air. Sophomore wide receiver
Cody Gustafson (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) caught four passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns while freshman quarterback
Josh Ehst (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) completed 6 of 11 passes for 248 yards and three scores.
Junior running back
Wesley Schools (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis) went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season as he ran for 163 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. Schools now has 1,004 yards this year.
Defensively, the Wolverines forced three turnovers and had three quarterback sacks. Senior safety
Daniel Jackson (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) intercepted two passes in the win and sophomore safety
Patrick Mark (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Wellington) also intercepted a pass. Senior nose tackle
Connor Lowe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) and freshman linebacker
Parker Kilgore (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) both had sacks. Senior linebacker
Sam Henson (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomore end
Thomas Ellis (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) combined on a sack.
Grove City jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of Gustafson touchdown catches. On the second scrimmage play of the game, Ehst fired a 61-yard touchdown pass to Gustafson, giving Grove City a 7-0 lead 40 seconds into the game.
Ehst then threw a 68-yard strike to Gustafson at the 9:46 mark of the first quarter. Freshman kicker
Nick Morrow (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) kicked the second of his four extra points to push the score to 14-0.
The Wolverines carried the 14-0 lead into the fourth quarter. A goal line stand by the Wolverines forced Waynesburg's Garret Guthrie to kick a 29-yard field goal with 13:56 remaining. Grove City quickly answered on its subsequent drive as Ehst threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver
Cameron Drake (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) on the second play of the drive.
Schools sealed the win with a seven-yard touchdown run at the 4:53 mark. Gustafson's 30-yard reception on the previous play gave Grove City goal to go.
Mark led the Grove City defense with nine tackles. Henson and senior linebacker
Ethan Conto (Bruin, Pa./Karns City) both had eight stops.
Waynesburg finished with 295 offensive yards. Quarterback Tyler Perone completed 19 of 39 passes for 195 yards.
Saturday's win marked the first time since September 14, 2013 that Grove City held an opponent without a touchdown. That day, Grove City blanked Anderson (Ind.), 42-0. It's the first time the Wolverines have held a conference opponent without a touchdown since a 35-3 win November 12, 2011 at Thiel.
Grove City will have next Saturday off before returning to action October 27 against visiting Saint Vincent. Kickoff at Robert E. Thorn Field for that conference game will be 1:30 p.m.
