Seventh-inning rally leads Wolverines past Saints

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College baseball team took advantage of Thomas More errors to score seven two-out runs in the top of the seventh inning to erase a 5-0 deficit and rally for a 7-5 upset victory over the Saints in a single, nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference game at Thomas More Field on a sunny Wednesday afternoon.

Junior center fielder Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) and sophomore third baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) each had two hits on the day for the Wolverines (15-16, 12-9 PAC) while each of the other seven Grove City starters recorded one hit. Meanwhile, sophomore pitcher John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) overcame a rocky start to pitch six strong innings and improve to 5-1 on the year, and freshman Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) threw three shutout innings of relief to earn his second collegiate save.

In a game where 12 total runs were scored, just two total frames saw any scoring. The Wolverines fell into an early hole as a pair of walks and three hits -- including a Bailey Abbatiello three-run home run -- led to five runs for Thomas More (23-8, 13-5 PAC) in the bottom of the first. However, despite threats from both teams, Bini and Thomas More starter Griffin Smallwood both found their grooves and kept the score at 5-0 through six innings.

In the top of the seventh, senior shortstop David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) started the Wolverine rally by reaching on an error. A single up the middle by sophomore second baseman Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) moved Laylock to second, and, following a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Burke singled through the left side to score Laylock and get the Wolverines on the board. Senior first baseman Matt Waugaman (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) drove both runners home with a single to right field to close the gap to 5-3 and then stole second base before sophomore left fielder Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) drew a walk. Freshman designated hitter Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) drove a double to deep center field to tie the score at 5-5, and senior right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) then singled to left and advanced on the throw toward home to score Dayton and give the Wolverines their first lead of the day at 6-5.

Senior catcher Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) reached on an error during the ensuing at bat, allowing Myers to score and add an insurance run for a 7-5 lead.

That would be enough, as Wacker allowed just two singles and struck out four over the final three innings to seal the important victory. In the start, Bini allowed eight hits and five runs over six innings while striking out three but permitted just five hits in five scoreless innings after the rocky first frame.

Grove City's victory was their first at Thomas More since March 30, 2012. Also of note, Waugaman, already Grove City's all-time putouts leader, surpassed the 1,000-putout mark in his career and now has 1,005.

The Wolverines return to action on Saturday for a doubleheader against Chatham at 1 p.m. Saturday's games will not count in the PAC standings this season. In addition, following Saturday's games, the Wolverines will honor their nine seniors: pitcher Ben Finlan (State College, Pa./State College), Fritz, designated hitter/first baseman Nick Fryer (Medina, Ohio/Medina), pitcher Cedric Hils (West Homestead, Pa./Central Catholic), pitcher Cameron Lawson (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), Laylock, Myers, pitcher Jimmy Palmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), and Waugaman.
