Wolverines whip Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon from longtime rival Westminster, 6-0 and 15-3.

In the opener, sophomore pitcher John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) fired a three-hit shutout for Grove City. Bini (4-1) struck out three and did not walk a man in seven innings. A 17-hit offensive outburst then propelled Grove City to its Game Two victory.

Grove City grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game One when senior right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) cracked a two-run single that drove in sophomore left fielder Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and sophomore third baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.).

The Wolverines pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second when sophomore second baseman Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) scored on a double play. In the fourth, senior catcher Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) singled in Auth. Myers, who went 2 for 3, later scored Grove City's fifth run on an error.

An error in the seventh inning brought in junior second baseman Cameron Smail (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) with Grove City's final run.

Myers and Burke both laced two-run singles in the first inning of Game Two, helping Grove City bolt to a 7-0 lead. Fritz added a sacrifice fly during the rally while freshman DH Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and junior center fielder Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) both walked with the bases loaded.

Grove City extended the lead to 11-0 in the second inning. Senior first baseman Matt Waugaman (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) blasted a solo homer to ignite the inning. Myers and Dulay both singled in runs while senior shortstop David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) knocked in Dayton with a groundout.

Fritz drilled a two-run homer in the fourth while Waugaman and Smail added run-scoring singles later in the inning, extending Grove City's lead to 15-2.

Dulay finished 3 for 4 while Auth, Burke, Graham, Myers and Waugman all had two hits each. Auth, Burke, Dayton and Dulay scored twice.

Freshman pitcher Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) allowed one earned run in six innings. He struck out four and walked one, improving to 4-4 on the season. Senior Cedric Hils (West Homestead, Pa./Central Catholic) pitched a perfect seventh in relief.

Grove City will host Westminster in a single conference game Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Saturday's game at Jack Behringer Field will conclude the teams' regular season series.
