LATROBE, Pa. -- Sophomore
John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) improved to 3-1 with another strong outing on the mound as the Wolverines rebounded from a 2-0 Game One loss to defeat Saint Vincent 3-2 in the nightcap to earn the doubleheader split and the Presidents' Athletic Conference season-series victory over the Bearcats on Thursday afternoon at Bearcat Ballfield.
The Wolverines (11-14, 8-7 PAC) actually received solid performances from both of their starting pitchers on the day to help offset an offense that produced just eight total hits in the two games. Bini scattered nine hits and two runs over a complete-game seven innings while matching his career-high with seven strikeouts. In the opener, freshman
Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) took the tough loss on the mound despite allowing just five hits and two earned runs over six innings while striking out four.
In the game two win, Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first by taking advantage of four walks. Junior outfielder
Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) led off the game with an infield single, and senior shortstop
David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) and senior right fielder
Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) both reached on walks to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by senior catcher
Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) scored Graham and and advanced Laylock, and, after freshman designated hitter
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) walked to re-load the bases, sophomore third baseman
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) drew an RBI-walk to score Laylock.
Kilkeary homered in the bottom of the second to cut the Wolverine lead in half, but the Wolverines got that run back in the top of the fifth with senior first baseman
Matt Waugaman (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) singled and later came home to score on a Dayton RBI-single. That run would prove to be important, as Saint Vincent cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but Bini allowed just one hit in each of the final two innings to hold on for the victory.
Graham went 2-for-4 in the win while Dayton and Burke were both 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
In the opener, Saint Vincent (11-13, 6-6) got on the board in the bottom of the second when Eddie Kilkeary tripled and game home to score one batter later on an RBI-groundout from Bobby Finn. That proved to be enough, as the Wolverines managed just three total hits and never had more than one baserunner in any inning. The Bearcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Chris Winkler scored on a Doug Martin RBI-single.
Waugaman, Myers and sophomore second baseman
Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) each went 1-for-2 in the setback.
Grove City returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Thomas More in a PAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
