AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Senior shortstop
David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBI, but it wasn't enough as the Grove City College baseball team fell to Coe 14-4 in seven innings on Friday afternoon in the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park Field #6.
The game, a scheduled nine-inning game, was ended after seven innings due to agreement between the two coaches prior to first pitch to use the 10-run rule.
Junior left fielder
Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) was 2 for 4 with a double and a run while freshman center fielder
Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added a double.
After Coe (4-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, Grove City (3-6) got on the board in the top of the third when freshman right fielder
Wesley Schools (Sparrowbush, N.J./Port Jervis) walked and Laylock sent him home with an RBI-double to cut the Kohawk lead to 2-1.
Coe tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 4-1, but the Wolverines answered in the top of the fourth. Wacker led the inning with a double and advanced to third on a groundout by junior second baseman
Cameron Smail (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area). Graham drew a walk and then stole second, and Schools was also walked to load the bases. A Laylock single through the right side scored Wacker, and senior catcher
Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) reached on a fielder's choice to score Graham. Sophomore third baseman
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./EVAC) then followed with a single to score Schools and tie the game at 4-4.
The score would remain tied into the bottom of the fifth. Grove City got two quick outs, but struggled to get the third, as the Kohawks rattled off six consecutive hits - including a pair of home runs - to plate six runs and take a commanding 10-4 lead. Grove City had the bases loaded in the sixth but couldn't capitalize, and the Wolverines also came up empty in the top of the seventh. Coe then added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead to 14-4 and end the game per the 10-run rule.
Senior
Ben Finlan (State College, Pa./State College) took the loss on the mound for Grove City, allowing 11 hits and nine runs over four and two-thirds innings. Senior
Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) allowed five runs on six hits in one and one-third-plus innings of relief.
Grove City will look to close its Florida trip on a high note tomorrow when they play Renssalear Polytechnic Institute in a 9 a.m. get-away game.
