GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team amassed 502 yards of total offense and 32 first downs Saturday afternoon but the Wolverines dropped a 43-34 decision to visiting Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Senior Day at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Sophomore quarterback
Randall Labrie (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) threw for a career-high 301 yards and a career-high four touchdowns on 25-of-41 accuracy while two Grove City wide receivers went over the 100-yard mark for the game.
Freshman wide receiver
Cody Gustafson (Newburg, Pa./Shippensburg) hauled in a career-high 15 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Gustafson tied Grove City's single-game record by catching 15 passes. It is also a single-game rookie record at Grove City. Senior wide receiver
Matt Pennypacker (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) pulled in eight catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns.
Sophomore running back
Wesley Schools (Sparrow Bush, N.Y./Port Jervis) posted his sixth consecutive 100-yard effort as he rushed for 133 yards on 31 carries. Labrie added 68 yards and a score on 22 attempts.
Grove City took a 7-6 lead with 8:24 left in the first quarter when Labrie fired a 22-yard touchdown pass to Pennypacker. Sophomore kicker
Mitch Causer (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont-Hilltop) drilled the extra point, putting the Wolverines (3-6, 3-4 PAC) ahead.
Touchdown receptions by Jacob Quinn and Nijal Rodgers gave Bethany a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Pennypacker pulled in a 37-yard touchdown pass with 11:41 left in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 20-14.Â
Bethany quarterback Carlin Bason scored on a 60-yard run and Chris Ray kicked a 30-yard field goal late in the first half to give Bethany a 29-14 halftime lead.Â
Grove City pulled to within 29-21 with 5:04 left in the third quarter as Labrie scored on a one-yard sneak. Labrie's sneak capped a 16-play, 90-yard drive that used 7:17. Each team then scored a pair of touchdowns in the final 3:16 of the game.
Gustafson grabbed a 12-yard touchdown pass with 3:16 left, slashing the lead to 29-27. The Wolverines' game-tying two-point conversion misfired, however.Â
Bethany halfback Raekwon Wright recovered Grove City's onside kick attempt and three plays later, he scored on a 38-yard touchdown run with 2:51 left to put Bethany up 36-27.Â
Grove City countered with a six-play, 70-yard drive that used only 50 seconds, capped by Gustafson's seven-yard touchdown catch that slashed the lead to 36-34. Wright again fielded the onside kick, however, and then sealed the victory with a 46-yard touchdown run with 1:39 left.Â
Bethany finished with 403 offensive yards on 52 plays. Wright ran for 158 yards while quarterback Chase Kinemond completed 14 of 23 passes for 176 yards.Â
Defensively, junior linebacker
Sam Henson (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) led the Grove City defense with two sacks and a forced fumble. Junior linebacker
Ethan Conto (Bruin, Pa./Karns City) also had a sack. Junior cornerback
Daniel Jackson (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) paced the Wolverines with seven tackles.
Sophomore defensive tackle
Colton Young (Orangeville, Pa./Central Columbia) blocked an extra point, his team-leading fourth blocked kick of the season.
Grove City will conclude the 2017 regular season next Saturday at Thiel in the 34th annual battle for the prestigious Mercer County Cup. Kickoff in Greenville will be at 1 p.m.
