Big day for passing game at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 49-27 decision Saturday afternoon to Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Memorial Field. 

Grove City produced a pair of 100-yard receivers in the game as freshman wide receiver Cody Gustafson (Newburg, Pa./Shippensburg) hauled in nine passes for 118 yards and senior wide receiver Matt Pennypacker (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) caught six passes for 108 yards. Each man caught a touchdown pass.

Sophomore quarterback Randall Labrie (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) completed 20 of 33 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns while sophomore running back Wesley Schools (Sparrowbush, N.Y./Port Jervis) ran for 106 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. Schools posted his fourth straight 100-yard outing.

Grove City jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the second quarter. Schools opened the scoring at 8:10 of the first quarter with a one-yard touchdown plunge. Sophomore kicker Mitch Causer (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont-Hilltop) pushed the lead to 10-0 with 53 seconds left in the period by drilling a 37-yard field goal.

Causer then kicked a 35-yard field goal with 5:37 left in the first half, giving the Wolverines a 13-0 lead. 

Westminster scored twice in the final 2:05 of the second quarter, however. Quarterback Paul Columbo scored on an 89-yard touchdown run, then threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Connor Cox with 55 seconds left in the half. Westminster led 14-13 at halftime.

Columbo threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Zaire Williams with 9:08 left in the third quarter, pushing Westminster's lead to 21-13. Labrie fired a 16-yard touchdown pass to Gustafson with 3:28 remaining in the period, bringing Grove City to within 21-19. Westminster blocked the extra point.

Cox caught a 45-yard touchdown pass and Todd Jeter added a 33-yard interception return within an 11-second span in the third quarter to help Westminster break open the game. Pennypacker pulled in a 34-yard touchdown pass from Labrie with 12:05 remaining in the fourth quarter. Senior wide receiver Gabe Greco (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) caught the two-point conversion to make it a 42-27 game.

Grove City held a 27-14 edge in first downs, along with a 37:35-22:25 edge in time of possession. The Wolverines finished with 376 offensive yards on 79 plays. Westminster had 446 offensive yards. Columbo threw for 231 yards and also ran for 94 yards.

Freshman linebacker Carl Jaszcar (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) and senior linebacker Andrew Seifert (Kettering, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) both had seven tackles for Grove City.

Grove City returns to action October 28 when the Wolverines host archrival Geneva at 1:30 p.m. at Robert E. Thorn Field.
