LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped its road opener in Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon by falling at Saint Vincent, 57-32, at Chuck Noll Field. Saint Vincent broke open the game by scoring 20 unanswered points over the final eight minutes of the third quarter.
Freshman running back
Wesley Schools (Sparrowbush, N.Y./Port Jervis) led Grove City by rushing for a career-high 236 yards and three touchdowns on 39 carries. Schools' second touchdown of the game came on a 56-yard with 13:30 left in the third quarter and brought Grove City to within 24-22.Â
Schools opened Grove City's scoring with an eight-yard touchdown run at the 12:23 mark of the second quarter, cutting the Saint Vincent lead to 7-6.Â
Saint Vincent quarterback Derek Stewart threw touchdown passes of 71 and two yards, respective to D.J. Oceant-Kelly in the second quarter that pushed the Bearcats' lead to 21-6. Grove City answered quickly, however, as freshman wide receiver
Nick Ponikvar (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback
Brett Laffoon (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) with 2:24 remaining in the first half.
Saint Vincent's Sam Elliott kicked a 26-yard field goal with 50 seconds in the half but the Wolverines cut the deficit to 24-16 on the final play of the first half as freshman kicker
Mitch Causer (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont-Hilltop) drilled a 28-yard field goal.
Senior kicker
Payton Carlucci (Mars, Pa./Vincentian) kicked a 22-yard field goal that slashed Saint Vincent's lead to 30-25 with 9:18 left in the first half. However, Saint Vincent halfback Shavonta Craft scored on a six-yard run and then a 63-yard screen pass from Stewart. Stewart later threw two touchdown passes to Dalton Dietrich.Â
Schools closed Grove City's scoring with a one-yard run at 6:41 of the fourth quarter.
Laffoon finished 18 of 35 for 198 yards. Ponikvar caught five passes for 60 yards while senior wide receiver
David Folkmire (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) had five receptions for 40 yards. Senior
Brett Pinson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) added three receptions for a team-leading 61 yards.Â
Junior safety
Andrew Seifert (Kettering, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) led the Grove City defense with seven tackles. Junior defensive ends
Jacob Armbrecht (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) and
Caleb Allen (La Grange, Ky./Oldham County) combined for a sack.Â
Stewart finished 28 of 38 for 442 yards. Saint Vincent outgained Grove City, 545-390. Grove City held a 26-22 edge in first downs. Grove City held the ball for 37 minutes, 28 seconds on offense.Â
Grove City will host Waynesburg next Saturday at 2 p.m. in the annual Homecoming game at Robert E. Thorn Field.Â
