BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 33-14 road decision Saturday afternoon to Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Bethany at Bison Stadium.
Grove City trailed 13-7 at halftime but Bethany turned two Wolverine fumbles into touchdowns in the first two minutes of the third quarter, extending the Bison's lead to 27-7.
Grove City took a 7-6 lead with 4:58 remaining in the first quarter when freshman running back
Wesley Schools (Sparrowbush, N.Y./Port Jervis) scored on a 19-yard run. Schools led Grove City with 64 rushing yards.
The Wolverines closed the scoring with 14:16 left in the fourth quarter as senior quarterback
Caleb Jakiel (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver
Gabe Greco (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton).
Jakiel finished 6 of 17 for 58 yards. Freshman quarterback
Brett Laffoon (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) threw for 135 yards on 8-of-17 accuracy. Senior wide receiver
Brett Pinson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) caught six passes for 122 yards.
Senior linebacker
Jeff Croll (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) and junior linebacker
Josh McElrone (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) both recorded 10 tackles for the Wolverines. McElrone also had a sack and three tackles for loss.
Junior end
Jacob Armbrecht (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) and senior end
Dan Dorman (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) combined on a sack. Armbrecht, junior linebacker
Deion Minor (Sykesville, Md./Century) and junior safety
Kyle Beyer (Perry, Ohio/Perry) all forced fumbles. Beyer also recovered a fumble.
Bethany quarterback Chase Kinemond threw for 308 yards and five touchdowns on 19-of-25 passing. He also ran for 86 yards. Jalen Holmes led Bethany with 102 rushing yards on 23 carries. Tyler Ambush had 10 catches for 192 yards and two scores.
Bethany owned a 568-269 edge in total offense.
Grove City will conclude the 2016 season next Saturday at home against Thiel in the 33rd annual battle for the prestigious Mercer County Cup.
