CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- Senior quarterback
Caleb Jakiel (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) came on in relief Saturday afternoon to throw three touchdowns for the Grove City College football team, but the Wolverines dropped a 70-20 decision to No. 15 Thomas More (5-1, 5-0) in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at BB&T Bank Field.
Jakiel threw for 204 yards on 17-of-32 passing after freshman quarterback
Brett Laffoon (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) left due to injury. Jakiel's 20-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver
Gabe Greco (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) with 7:03 left in the first half cut Thomas More's lead to 14-7.Â
Jakiel then threw a pair of 28-yard touchdown passes in the second half to freshman wide receiver
Nick Ponikvar (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette). Ponikvar caught five passes for 90 yards while Greco had a team-high six receptions for 57 yards. Senior
David Folkmire (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) added four catches for 42 yards.Â
Freshman running back
Wesley Schools (Sparrowbush, N.Y./Port Jervis) led the Wolverines with 57 rushing yards on 16 carries. Junior
Andrew Schauer (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) added 45 yards on 10 attempts.Â
Grove City finished with 22 first downs and 354 yards of total offense. The Wolverines also owned a 32:23-27:37 edge in time of possession.
Defensively, Grove City forced three turnovers. Junior linebacker
Deion Minor (Sykesville, Md./Century) and sophomore linebacker Shawn Simmons (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) both intercepted passes for the Wolverines. Junior defensive end
Caleb Allen (La Grange, Ky./Oldham County) forced a fumble that junior defensive end
Jacob Armbrecht (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) recovered.Â
Sophomore cornerback
Ethan Conto (Bruin, Pa./Karns City) led the defense with 11 tackles while Minor had 10 stops.Â
Thomas More quarterback Brenan Kuntz completed 19 of 27 passes for 272 yards and five touchdowns. Logan Winkler led the Saints with seven receptions for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Hjavier Pitts ran for a game-high 79 yards on 10 carries.Â
Grove City will host conference rival Westminster next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
