Grove City drops home opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team opened its home schedule Saturday night with a 21-16 setback to Geneva at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Grove City drove to the Geneva 8 on its final possession of the game but could not generate the go-ahead score as Geneva safety Thomas Benyo intercepted a pass with 1:48 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Grove City fell behind 13-0 in the first half but cut the lead to 13-6 when junior quarterback Antonio Carroscia (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) fired an 18-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Brett Pinson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) at the 6:13 mark.

Geneva blocked the extra point and Nate Cannon returned the block for a defensive two-point conversion.

Grove City cut Geneva's lead to 15-13 with 1:17 left in the first half when Carroscia threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Josh Peach (Hartville, Ohio/Lake). A blocked punt by sophomore safety Kyle Beyer (Perry, Ohio/Perry) set up the Wolverines' 30-yard touchdown drive.

The Wolverines took their first lead of the night with 7:45 left in the third quarter on a 21-yard field goal by senior kicker Payton Carlucci (Mars, Pa./Vincentian). Pinson's 75-yard reception helped set up Carlucci's field goal.

Geneva's Javid Ellis scored on a four-yard run with 6:46 left in the game to put the Tornadoes ahead. Ellis's five-yard touchdown run with 9:52 remaining in the first quarter opened the scoring.

Pinson caught four passes for a career-high 119 yards while Peach grabbed a game-high six receptions for 64 yards. Carroscia completed 20 of 38 passes for 247 yards.

Sophomore Andrew Schauer (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) led Grove City with 35 rushing yards on six carries.

Beyer also had 10 tackles, a sack and 3.5 tackles for loss, in addition to his blocked punt. Senior nose tackle Brent Veerman (Powell, Ohio/Columbus Crusaders) and sophomore defensive end Jacob Armbrecht (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) also had sacks. Senior inside linebacker Bobby Tuttle (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) intercepted a pass and Armbrecht recovered a fumble.

Senior inside linebacker Brandon Berringer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) recorded a game-high 12 tackles. Geneva outgained Grove City, 259-220.

Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play in two weeks against Saint Vincent. It will be Grove City's Homecoming game September 26, with kickoff set for 2 p.m.
