Record-setting season ends in tournament

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team went 1-1 Friday at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, hosted by top-seeded Westminster College. Grove City opened the day with an 8-5 victory over No. 3 seed Geneva in an elimination game at the double-elimination tournament. However, the fourth-seeded Wolverines fell in another elimination game to Allegheny in Friday's finale, 3-2.

Grove City concludes the season with a 25-17 overall record. The 25 wins are the most in one season in program history, surpassing Grove City's 21-win performance in 2023.

Grove City broke open the opener against Geneva by scoring all eight of its runs in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman pitcher Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) belted a game-tying double that scored junior first baseman Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) to help spark the outburst.

Senior pinch hitter Erin Mulholland (Malvern, Pa./Delaware County Christian) and freshman left fielder Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) both walked with the bases loaded while senior catcher Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) drove in freshman DP Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) with a sacrifice fly.

The lead swelled to 7-1 later in the inning when Brodie, who led off the inning with a single, stroked a bases-clearing triple that scored Montone, Mulholland and junior second baseman Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana). Brodie then scored the eighth run of the inning on a Meadors single.

Meadors finished 3 for 4 while Brodie went 2 for 3. Linhart singled twice.

Meadors earned her 12th win of the season by throwing a complete game. She struck out seven batters while allowing five runs.

Grove City jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Allegheny in the first inning when Brodie singled in Harris. In the third, Grove City reclaimed a 2-1 lead when Montone singled in Harris. Following a 60-minute rain delay, second-seeded Allegheny scored twice to take its first lead of the game.

Harris finished 3 for 4 while Brodie added a pair of hits. Jackson doubled. The Wolverines finished with eight hits.

Brodie started in the pitcher's circle and allowed two earned runs in four innings. She allowed four hits but took the setback. Meadors pitched two hitless innings of relief.

Linhart finished the season with 40 runs scored, tying her own single-season school record set in 2023. Meadors struck out a Grove City-record 134 batters in 121 innings this spring. Her 12 wins are third-most in a season at Grove City.

Harris, Mulholland and senior pitcher Kaitlyn Constantino (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) will graduate from the program.
