PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball split a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at La Roche. The Wolverines won the opener, 9-3, while La Roche took the second game by an 8-3 score. Grove City's Game One win marked the Wolverines' 21st win of the season, tying the single-season program record set last year.
The Wolverines collected 11 hits in the opener, led by a 3-for-4 outing from freshman pitcher
Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry). Junior second baseman
Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) and sophomore center fielder
Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) both doubled and singled. Sophomore catcher
Kristin Tesch (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) added a double.
Linhart doubled in senior DP
Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) to give Grove City an early 1-0 lead. Anthony scored on an error in the second inning, pushing the lead to 2-0. Grove City added a pair of runs in the third as Jackson singled in Harris while Linhart later scored on a double steal.
In the fourth inning, Linhart's single scored junior third baseman
Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle), pushing the lead to 5-0. Jackson then cracked a two-run single that scored Linhart and Tesch. Tesch doubled home Zona and Anthony in the fifth, closing the scoring.
Jackson earned the win by throwing a complete game. She struck out six while allowing three earned runs and eight hits.
Junior pitcher
Emily Wentworth (Potsdam, N.Y./Canton) tripled and doubled to pace Grove City's offense in the nightcap. Tesch and junior right fielder
Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) both doubled.
Grove City (21-15) forged a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning as Rinehart doubled in Tesch, then came home on Wentworth's double.
Wentworth pitched five innings and took the setback. She allowed five hits. Jackson pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
Grove City will conclude its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Friday at Saint Vincent. The doubleheader will start at 3:30 p.m.
