Grove City earns road split at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College softball split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Bethany College. Grove City (11-7, 3-1 PAC) earned a 5-0 victory in the opener while Bethany (14-3, 2-2 PAC) pulled out a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

Freshman pitcher Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) fired a four-hit shutout in the opener for Grove City. Meadors (6-2) allowed four singles while striking out six batters.

Grove City broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning when junior right fielder Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) drove in freshman left fielder Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) with a sacrifice fly.

The Wolverines then added a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Junior first baseman Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) walked and later scored on a throwing error. Montone tripled in junior second baseman Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead.

Rinehart led off the sixth inning with an infield hit and junior third baseman Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) followed with a double. Brodie's sacrifice fly to left field scored Rinehart. Zona scored the Wolverines' final run when senior catcher Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) singled through the left side.

Linhart and Meadors both went 3 for 4 in Game One. Brodie doubled while Harris went 1 for 2 with a pair of sacrifices.

Grove City outhit Bethany in Game Two, 7-5, but three Bethany double plays helped foil the Wolverines. Harris went 3 for 3.

Grove City trailed 2-0 in the third inning but tied the game when senior DP Erin Mulholland (Malvern, Pa./Delaware County Christian) singled in Harris. An overthrow on the play allowed Linhart to score the tying run.

Brodie started in the pitcher's circle and allowed three earned runs in five innings. Brodie (2-3) struck out five but absorbed the defeat. Freshman Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) pitched a perfect sixth inning in relief.

Grove City enters the weekend having won 7 of its last 8 games. The Wolverines are tied for first in the league with Saint Vincent, Thiel and Waynesburg four games into the 20-game conference gauntlet.

The Wolverines return to action Monday at 3:30 p.m. by hosting Pitt-Bradford in a non-conference game. Grove City will host conference doubleheaders Tuesday and Wednesday. The Wolverines host longtime rival Geneva at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, then host Chatham the next day at 3:30 p.m.
