Grove City rallies for road split

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team earned a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon at Allegheny in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Robertson Complex. After dropping the opener, 8-0, Grove City rebounded in Game Two for a 5-1 victory in eight innings. The Wolverines are now 15-11 overall and 9-5 in the conference.

The Wolverines scored four times in the top of the eighth inning in the nightcap, breaking a 1-1 tie. Junior catcher Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and sophomore DP Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) opened the inning with back-to-back singles. A throwing error on Brodie's hit allowed Harris to score the go-ahead run.

Brodie later scored on a sacrifice fly from senior shortstop Lexi Buck (Akron, Ohio/Lake Center Christian), giving Grove City a 3-1 lead. With two outs, senior pitcher Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) belted a two-run double that scored sophomore right fielder Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) and freshman center fielder Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion).

Dawson then retired Allegheny (21-7, 11-3 PAC) in order in the bottom of the eighth. Dawson fired a five-hitter, allowing no earned runs over her eight innings. She struck out six and walked two, improving to 6-5 on the season.

Buck gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth when she singled in sophomore second baseman Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana). Linhart helped pace Grove City's 11-hit attack by going 3 for 5. Dawson doubled twice while Harris finished 2 for 4.

Buck doubled and singled for Grove City in the opener. Junior pitcher Kaitlyn Constantino (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) allowed five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings for Grove City. She struck out four and walked one.

Grove City will host conference co-leader Waynesburg University (21-5, 10-2) at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at College Field.
