FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Grove City College softball owns a 2-2 record after the first two days of action at the Gene Cusic Classic. Grove City opened its 10-game trip Monday by splitting games with Drew and Anna Maria. After a 6-4 setback to Drew in the opener, the Wolverines rebounded for a 5-1 win over Anna Maria.
Tuesday, Grove City rallied for a 15-7 victory over Clark in the first game of the day. Potsdam State edged Grove City in eight innings, 3-2, to close Tuesday.
Junior catcher
Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) helped pace Grove City against Drew by going 2 for 3 while senior pitcher
Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) went 2 for 4. Sophomore second baseman
Maci Linhart (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) belted a triple and junior left fielder
Lauren McNeil (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) added a double.
Dawson threw a complete game in the circle, allowing three earned runs in six innings. She struck out four and walked two batters.
The Wolverines bounced back for a 5-1 win over Anna Maria by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Dawson tied the game by singling in senior third baseman
Michaela Ban (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong). Sophomore first baseman
Brooke Brodie (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) broke the 1-1 tie later in the inning as her two-run triple scored Dawson and Linhart.
Brodie later scored on a single from senior shortstop
Lexi Buck (Akron, Ohio/Lake Center Christian). Buck scored the fifth run of the inning when she came home on a wild pitch.
Ban, Brodie and Dawson all finished 2 for 3. Junior
Kaitlyn Constantino (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) earned the pitching win by striking out six batters in five innings. She allowed two hits. Freshman
Miranda Metro (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) closed out the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
Grove City trailed Clark 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning but tied the game with a three-run rally that inning. The Wolverines then posted eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the eight-run mercy rule.
Freshman third baseman
Rylie Eaton (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) cut the lead to 7-5 when her bases loaded walk scored Harris. Sophomore right fielder
Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) then laced a game-tying, two-run single that brought in Buck and McNeil.
Grove City surged ahead in the sixth when junior catcher
Emily Smyth (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) doubled home Linhart. McNeil's bases-clearing double pushed the lead to 11-7 as Brodie, Harris and Smyth all scored. Rinehart followed by driving in McNeil. Dawson singled home Eaton with Grove City's 13th run. Dawson and Linhart later scored on Brodie's game-clinching two-run single.
Rinehart went 3 for 3 with a career-high five runs batted in. Brodie went 3 for 4 while Dawson finished 3 for 5 with a double. McNeil and Smyth both had two hits. Eaton and Linhart both scored three runs.
Dawson earned the pitching win in relief, allowing two unearned runs in two innings. She struck out two. Brodie started and allowed one earned run in four innings.
Grove City trailed Potsdam State, 2-0, after six innings but the Wolverines rallied to force extra innings. Buck scored on a wild pitch and Linhart later scored the tying run on Brodie's groundout.
The teams then used the international tiebreaker in the eighth inning. Harris reached third with no outs but Grove City stranded her with a lineout and consecutive strikeouts. Potsdam State scored the game-winning run on an error in the bottom of the eighth.
Smyth went 2 for 4 to help pace Grove City. Metro started in the circle and tossed three shutout innings. She struck out three, walked one and allowed one hit. Constantino struck out six in 4 1/3 innings of relief. She yielded two earned runs.
Wednesday, Grove City will face Haverford at 9 a.m. The Wolverines then face Rockford at 1 p.m.
