NAPLES, Fla. -- The Grove City College softball team closed its week-long, 10-game Spring Break trip Friday afternoon by pulling out a 6-4 victory over Alverno at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Wolverines opened Friday's action with a 6-1 setback against John Carroll.
Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning against Alverno without recording a hit. Senior shortstop
Lexi Buck (Akron, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) walked and later scored on a squeeze from sophomore right fielder
Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry).
The Wolverines added a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Junior catcher
Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) singled in senior pinch runner
Clare Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Indian River) to give Grove City a 2-0 lead. Buck later reached on a bases loaded hit batsman, bringing home junior pinch runner
Lauren McNeil (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).
In the sixth inning, senior pitcher
Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) doubled in Rinehart, pushing the lead to 4-0. Dawson scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. Dawson's run-scoring single in the seventh inning scored freshman pinch hitter
Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) with the Wolverines' final run.
Dawson went 3 for 5. She also earned the victory in the circle by firing a complete game. Dawson (2-2) struck out four and allowed eight hits over seven innings.
Junior second baseman
Erin Mulholland (Malvern, Pa./Delaware County Christian) accounted for Grove City's run in the opener when she singled in freshman pinch runner
Selah Severson (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) in the seventh inning.
Dawson went 2 for 4 while junior catcher
Emily Smyth (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) doubled.
Junior pitcher
Kaitlyn Constantino (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) threw a complete game for Grove City. She allowed one earned run in seven innings. Constantino struck out five, walked three and permitted 11 hits.
Dawson finished the trip 21 for 38 (.553) at the plate with nine runs batted in. Smyth hit .389 (14 of 36) with four doubles. Both players had hits in 9 of 10 games during the trip. Constantino and Dawson both picked up two wins.
Grove City (4-6) will host La Roche in a non-conference twinbill Friday at 3 p.m. in the northern opener at College Field.
