Grove City drops two in tournament

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team concluded the 2021 season Friday afternoon by dropping a pair of games in the double-elimination Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, hosted by Geneva College. Top-seeded Geneva topped Grove City in the opener, 9-0. The Wolverines then fell to Westminster in an elimination game, 11-0.

Geneva broke open the opener by scoring six times in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore DP Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) and senior first baseman Haley Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) each had singles for the Wolverines.

Senior pitcher Ashley Cornelius (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) started for Grove City. Cornelius allowed eight runs in 2 2/3 innings. Freshman Katilyn Constantino (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and yielded one run.

In Friday's second game, Westminster scored three times in the first inning, four runs in the second and added four more runs in the third. Dawson started in the circle and allowed seven earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. Cornelius pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, permitting four unearned runs. Dietz singled as Westminster held Grove City to one hit.

Grove City (16-20, 9-9 PAC) made its first appearance in the conference tournament since 2005 this spring. Thursday, the Wolverines defeated Chatham and Washington & Jefferson to advance to Friday's double-elimination round. Grove City's nine conference wins this spring marked the most for the program since 1998.

Cornelius, Dietz, outfielder Hannah Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and outfielder Ashley Mietlicki (Oak Hill, Va./South Lakes) are the team's seniors this spring. Cornelius finished the season with 112 strikeouts, tying the single-season program record first set by Allison Atwood in 2003.
