GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped a pair of 3-2 verdicts Saturday afternoon to visiting Washington & Jefferson in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at College Field.
Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the opener as sophomore third baseman
Maddie Clark (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) doubled and then scored on a double from freshman catcher
Emily Smyth (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township).
W&J took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning but Grove City trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the fifth as Smyth doubled home junior second baseman
Cara Polese (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest).Â

Ashley Cornelius both doubled and singled in Game One. Cornelius threw a complete game for the Wolverines, allowing two earned runs in seven innings. She struck out three while yielding seven hits.Â
Grove City scored twice in the bottom of the first in Game Two to take a 2-1 lead. Senior right fielder
Hannah Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) roped a single to right field that scored Polese and sophomore pitcher
Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley).Â
W&J tied the game in the third inning, then inched ahead on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning. Grove City put the tying run on base in the sixth and seventh innings but could not force extra innings.
Dietz and Polese both had two hits while junior center fielder
Morgan Prouty (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) doubled. Dawson singled, extending her hitting streak to 14 games.
Dawson allowed two earned runs in seven innings. She struck out two, walked two and permitted seven hits.
Grove City (11-17, 6-8 PAC) will visit Chatham for a conference doubleheader Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
