Grove City splits twinbill

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon with visiting Geneva at College Field. Grove City won the first game, 5-4, while Geneva rebounded for a 5-1 win in the second game. Both schools are members of the Presidents' Athletic Conference but Saturday's games are considered non-conference.

Grove City took the lead for good in the opener by erupting for four runs in the third inning. Grove City trailed 1-0 but senior left fielder Ashley Mietlicki (Oak Hill, Va./South Lakes) scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Freshman catcher Emily Smyth (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) then belted a three-run double that scored senior pitcher Ashley Cornelius (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman), junior center fielder Morgan Prouty (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and freshman Maralee Caldana (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle Area).

Grove City pushed the lead to 5-1 in the sixth inning when junior second baseman Cara Polese (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest) singled in freshman pinch runner Lauren McNeil (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Geneva cut the lead to 5-4 and had two runners in scoring position with one out in the seventh. Cornelius escaped the jam, however, to earn her second win of the season. Cornelius allowed three earned runs in seven innings. She struck out four and walked two.

Caldana and Polese both had two hits for Grove City (2-2).

Prouty and junior shortstop Lexi Buck (Akron, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) both doubled in Game Two for Grove City. Buck scored Grove City's lone run in the sixth inning when she came in on a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Lauren Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny).

Sophomore pitcher Janessa Dawson (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) pitched a complete game for the Wolverines but took the setback. She allowed five earned runs in seven innings. Dawson struck out one and walked two batters.

Grove City will visit Franciscan for a 3 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday in Steubenville, Ohio.
